AI in Education: the Ways Startups Get Us Learning

Written by Joanna Mierzejewska | Jan 21, 2020 9:42:16 AM

The decade you went to school in greatly alters the sort of technology you experienced while there, from typewriters to floppy disks, perhaps hiding games of Snake on your Nokia from the teacher, or having to do maths homework on your iPad. But technology at school is about more than updating software and addressing bullying in chatrooms.

Used right, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can mean better targeting of education, so kids are learning what they need to when they’re ready to, and better use of teachers’ time and school resources. If you’re ready to learn about the seismic shift AI is making in education, it’s time you put your phone away and listened to the teacher (err, that’s us).

Education Can Be Better

AI is an increasingly pervasive factor in our lives. From intelligent traffic management systems to online search results, targeted advertising and purchase recommendations, we’re often using AI without even being aware of it. And while we might grumble about Big Brother’s eyes on us, AI can truly be a way to improve our lived experience – as it is in education.

AI-powered systems in education help institutions to be more efficient and lower their operational costs. It can be a means to get greater visibility over real costs and income. Perhaps best of all, AI can help our schools and other educational institutions get better at responsiveness for stakeholders.

Part of the difficulty of mastering learning, is that we all learn differently, and at different rates. We have affinities for different subject matters. Imagine a school with few resources being able to use AI tutoring systems. These systems can engage students where they’re at, repeating lessons until they’ve got it and advancing them as they’re ready. It could greatly lessen the number of class interruptions by students messing about because they’re either bored or lost.

Imagine a student who ‘hates maths’ being 100% engaged because he’s learning via an AI tutoring app that caters to him by making all the learning based on his favourite subject: robots. Or a student in a new language able to learn in her native tongue while she adapts. Catering to needs, interests and gaps at this level of specificity wouldn’t be financially viable with human tutors for each student, but with AI, possibilities for hyper-personalisation are virtually boundless.

Classerium is a US startup in this area. They attended 10th Wolves Summit in Poland in October 2019 to talk to investors about their Universal IEM (Intelligence Enterprise Management) online ecosystem for personal and professional lifelong AI-guided learning. They’re continuing to build a global knowledge database benefiting all of humanity!
